When Doug and Tanya Bond moved to Atlanta from California more than 30 years ago, Doug wanted to bring the West Coast coffee scene to the city. San Francisco Coffee Roasting Company opened its first location in Virginia-Highland in 1992, serving as a trailblazer on the Atlanta coffee scene.
Now the Bonds are expanding with two new locations. A downtown spot at 1441 Peachtree St. NE opens April 4, and a 2,700-square-foot location at Sage Hill shopping center in Druid Hills is slated for this summer.
"It's a pretty legendary place," Doug said of the original Virginia-Highland location. "It's a destination. People get here, they land and they go, 'Where are we going to get coffee? We're going to Virginia-Highland to San Francisco Coffee.'"
The Midtown location will serve small-batch coffee roasted in-house. For a brand that predates the city's current coffee boom, the expansion signals confidence that Atlanta's appetite for quality independent coffee shops hasn't waned.
