Portman's Amsterdam Walk Teardown Comes Into Focus Off the Eastside Trail

Portman Holdings has filed a phase one site plan for redeveloping Amsterdam Walk, the old industrial pocket of local businesses along Monroe Drive near the BeltLine. The filing shows the developer plans to replace most or all of the existing buildings and orient the new project toward the Eastside Trail while keeping it away from nearby homes. Longtime tenants like Red Light Café are already getting notices to vacate.

About Virginia-Highland

Virginia-Highland (VaHi to locals) is one of Atlanta's most established walkable neighborhoods, centered around the intersection of Virginia and North Highland Avenues. The commercial district has a village feel, with locally-owned shops, restaurants, and bars lining the streets. It's the kind of neighborhood where you can walk to dinner, stop for ice cream at Morelli's, and stroll home without ever getting in a car.

The housing is mostly Craftsman bungalows and small Tudor homes, many lovingly maintained with strong property values. VaHi borders Piedmont Park to the west, giving residents easy access to the park and the BeltLine's Eastside Trail. Murphy's has been serving the neighborhood for decades. Hand in Hand and La Tavola are local favorites. It's a mature neighborhood that doesn't need to prove anything, popular with young professionals and families who want walkability and a bit of charm without the hustle of the BeltLine corridor.
