Memorial Day weekend is getting soaked. A flood watch remains in effect for much of north Georgia and metro Atlanta as another round of heavy thunderstorms moves through the region.
Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologists warn that downpours could bring flash flooding to streets, low-lying areas, and small streams throughout Monday. The following counties are under the watch: Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, Douglas, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Towns, Union, Walker, White, and Whitfield.
Sunday's storms already caused significant problems. Parts of Cobb, Paulding, and Cherokee counties received 3-6 inches of rain, with Woodstock recording about 6 inches in just a few hours. Flash flood warnings were issued overnight, and flooding blocked lanes on I-75 North near the Canton Road exit.
The wet pattern that has soaked the area since Wednesday shows no signs of letting up. More storms are expected through Tuesday, with the heaviest rain likely during mid-afternoon and evening hours Monday.
For those heading to outdoor Memorial Day events like the Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park, forecasters recommend having a backup plan. The festival continues through Monday evening, though performances may face weather delays.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport experienced a ground stop Sunday due to thunderstorms, with delays averaging 41 minutes. Travel conditions are expected to remain challenging through the holiday.
