MARTA just launched something that could actually change how we think about public transit. MARTA Reach is basically Uber for MARTA vans, letting you book shared rides within specific geographic zones using an app, website, or phone. The service started March 7th and covers a dozen zones across the metro.

Here's how it works: you request a ride within a zone, and a MARTA van picks you up within 30 minutes. Right now it's free during the introductory period, but starting March 28th it'll cost $2.50, same as a regular bus or rail trip. That includes four free transfers within three hours, which is actually a pretty good deal.

This is smart planning ahead of MARTA's big bus network overhaul. Instead of running mostly empty buses on routes that don't make sense, they can use these on-demand vans to serve areas where traditional fixed routes struggle. It's the kind of innovation that could actually make public transit work better for how people really live and move around the metro area.
