S. Epatha Merkerson stood in a room full of Black women in film at the Loudermilk Conference Center Saturday, and you could feel the weight of the moment. The veteran actress, who we all know from 'Law & Order' and currently 'Chicago Med,' received the On Her Shoulders Preservation Award from the Black Women Film Network's annual summit.
This isn't just another industry award. Merkerson has the hardware (Golden Globe, Emmy, SAG Award, four NAACP Image Awards), but this recognition from the Black Women Film Network feels more personal. She's approaching 40 years in television, and this award acknowledges not just her individual success, but her role in paving the way for others.
The summit itself is part of what makes Atlanta such a hub for Black creativity. We've got Tyler Perry Studios, all the film production happening here, and events like this that bring together the community of creators who are shaping the industry. Having this caliber of recognition happening downtown shows how central Atlanta has become to Black storytelling.
