So here we are again with Mayor Dickens playing games instead of doing his job. The Atlanta Fire Rescue union gave him until Friday to sign what would be the city's first-ever contract with firefighters, something City Council unanimously approved back in April 2025. Instead of putting pen to paper, Dickens decided to go full political attack mode against union president Nate Bailey.
The mayor's pulling some procedural nonsense, claiming there were "irregularities" in Bailey's re-election last November and demanding the union redo the whole thing in May. It's a classic stall tactic that leaves our firefighters hanging in limbo while Dickens plays politics. This contract has been sitting on his desk for almost a year after getting unanimous council approval, which tells you everything about how popular it is with the people who actually have to vote on it.
What's really frustrating is that this affects every neighborhood in the city. These are the folks who show up when your house is on fire or you need emergency medical help. They deserve a contract, and the city already agreed to the terms. The union is threatening legal action, and honestly, they should. This is just another example of Dickens' administration creating unnecessary drama where none needs to exist.
