A longtime affordable housing community adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine's newest section could see major changes as Boston-based Wingate Companies moves to purchase the Trestletree Village Apartments.

The two Trestletree communities, split between Grant Park and Ormewood Park, count a total of 188 units. Wingate, known locally as the developer behind City Lights in Old Fourth Ward, plans to close on both parcels this summer.

According to neighborhood sources, Wingate intends to relocate all affordable Section 8 tenants to the southern Trestletree location, then raze the northern site for redevelopment. The proposal calls for three-story apartment buildings ringing the site along with a new parking deck.

Some neighbors have expressed concern that denser housing could change the area's character. The northern site sits at 794 Ormewood Ave., bordered by an elevated BeltLine section, Ormewood Avenue, Eloise Street, and Mercer Street.

Wingate has not yet submitted formal development plans to the city.
