A tribute to a beloved Atlanta news anchor is getting a second life after a rough start. Bellwood Coffee says a new mural honoring the late Jovita Moore is officially in the design process, according to Capital B Atlanta.
The apology comes after real anger in Grant Park. Earlier this summer, residents discovered that Bellwood's new cafe had covered a colorful mural of Moore with dark gray paint and a business ad. Moore, the longtime WSB-TV anchor, died in 2021 at age 53 from brain cancer. The original piece, painted by local artist Tommy Bronx in November 2021, was commissioned by Atlanta United as part of a series honoring the city's figures.
Painting over a memorial to a public figure that neighbors loved was never going to go quietly, and it did not. The company now says it is working on a replacement. The real test will be whether the new mural feels like a genuine tribute or a cleanup job.
