MARTA's new Better Breeze fare payment system is live. 11Alive reported the rollout went into full effect this weekend, with riders now expected to pay using the new Orange Breeze card or by tapping a contactless credit card, debit card, or mobile wallet at the gates and bus fare boxes. The legacy blue Breeze cards that have been the standard since 2006 are being retired.

The Better Breeze system is the agency's first major fare hardware update in nearly two decades. Tap-to-pay support means a rider with a phone or watch enrolled in Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Wallet can ride without ever buying a card or loading value at a kiosk. Existing balances on legacy Breeze cards can be transferred to a new Orange card at any rail station with staffed customer service.

MARTA has been running outreach for months on the change, with signage at Five Points and other rail stations and a dedicated Better Breeze portal where riders can register a card and check balances online. The agency has framed the upgrade as bringing fare collection in line with peer transit systems in Chicago, New York, and the DC region that already accept open-loop contactless payment.

For regular riders the practical changes are small. The base fare structure is unchanged, transfers between bus and rail still apply, and reduced fare programs for seniors, riders with disabilities, and the half-fare program for low-income Atlantans continue under the new system. The bigger lift is for occasional and out-of-town riders, who can now tap through the gates without standing at a kiosk to load a paper ticket.
