More than 35,000 Georgians cast ballots on Monday, April 27, during the first day of early voting for the May 19 primary election, setting a new record for midterm primary turnout.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced the numbers, which reflect heightened interest in competitive races at nearly every level of government. Races for governor, U.S. Senate, and Congressional seats have drawn crowded fields in both parties.

The Atlanta Press Club and Georgia Public Broadcasting hosted debates Monday featuring both Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates as part of the Loudermilk-Young Debate Series. The debates highlighted sharp contrasts over taxes, the economy, and the role of outside money in Georgia politics.

Early voting continues through May 16 at locations across metro Atlanta and statewide.
