Georgia remains gripped by drought as the state heads into summer, though recent rains have provided some relief.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows 100% of Georgia is still experiencing some level of drought, with 56% of the state in extreme or exceptional drought conditions. That's down from 80% in the most severe categories last week.

Since Friday, more than three inches of rainfall has been recorded in Atlanta, more than what the city saw from March 15 through May 21 combined. But officials say much more rain is needed to erase the deficit.

"Drought conditions continue to exist across the state. A Level 1 Drought Response is the appropriate action at this time," said Katie Bloomfield, director of external affairs for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

The Level 1 declaration, in effect since April 27, requires public water utilities to inform customers about conservation and report monthly water withdrawals. The EPD continues to monitor whether higher drought response levels will be needed.

Flash flood threats return this weekend as waves of rain move through, potentially bringing 1-2 inches of additional rainfall.
