The World Cup may be over, but city officials say one upgrade is sticking around: smoother roads. The Atlanta Department of Transportation says Downtown now has 60% fewer potholes than it did in 2024, according to WSB-TV.
The repairs came out of a major push that began well ahead of the tournament, when crews used vehicle-mounted road scanners to map pavement damage across the city and target the worst corridors first. Downtown's pavement rating climbed from "fair" to "good" on a 100-point scale as a result.
City officials liked the results enough to keep the road-scanning program running past the World Cup. So if you spot a car with an odd device mounted on its roof, it is out there logging the next round of repairs.
