On July 18, 1996, the Olympic torch touched down at Atlanta City Hall. Thirty years later, a group of Olympic aficionados is marking the anniversary with a screening at the Tara Theatre, according to SaportaReport.
The film is the award-winning local documentary "The Games in Black & White," which tells the story of the partnership between Andrew Young and Billy Payne that won Atlanta the 1996 Games, from the bid through the Games themselves to the legacy they left behind. It premiered at the 2025 Atlanta Film Festival and later aired on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
The timing lands well. Atlanta just wrapped a World Cup that reshaped its Downtown the way the Olympics did a generation ago, so a look back at what the last mega-event actually left behind feels earned.
