Change is coming to that World Cup mural you see every time you're walking around downtown Decatur. The city commission approved a $234,015 budget Monday night to replace the WatchFest'26 mural at the intersection of Church and Sycamore streets. That's not pocket change for public art, which suggests they're planning something pretty substantial.
The current mural was all about celebrating FIFA World Cup 2026, which made sense when it was installed. But apparently the city is ready to move on to something different, though they haven't announced what the replacement will be. Given Decatur's track record with public art, it'll probably be something that reflects the community's character and values.
What I find interesting is the timing. The World Cup is still happening this summer, with games right here in Atlanta, but Decatur is already planning to move past that theme. Maybe they want something with more permanent relevance to the community, or maybe the current mural just wasn't aging well. Either way, that intersection is about to get a makeover.
