With less than 30 days until FIFA World Cup matches kick off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, downtown Atlanta just got a major new gathering spot. The CTR, the redeveloped former CNN Center, officially opened Wednesday with Mayor Andre Dickens and state leaders on hand to celebrate.

The transformation represents one of the most significant downtown revitalization projects in years. Where CNN's global headquarters once dominated, a mixed-use development now offers retail, dining, and entertainment options designed to activate the area around Centennial Olympic Park.

"This project is designed to create a more active and welcoming downtown experience for residents and visitors alike," city officials said. The timing is deliberate. World Cup organizers expect fans from around the globe to stay in nearby hotels, visit restaurants, and explore the city during the tournament.

The opening coincides with the city's broader World Cup preparations. Officials announced grants for eight Atlanta neighborhoods to host watch parties during the tournament, with areas including Cascade Heights and Little Five Points set to showcase local culture to international visitors.

The neighborhood watch parties are intended to spread the economic impact beyond downtown. Whether The CTR becomes a lasting anchor for downtown remains to be seen, but for June's World Cup, it will be a focal point for the soccer crowds descending on Atlanta.
