Sunday's Atlanta Streets Alive is starting earlier than usual with a completely new route that connects some dots you might not expect. The 'Beltline to Broad' route runs about two miles from Broad Street in South Downtown up Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to the Westside Trail in Vine City.
This isn't just another pretty route. It's connecting the heart of downtown to one of the city's most historically significant neighborhoods, giving people a chance to experience Vine City's connection to the civil rights movement and its ongoing revitalization. Plus, ending at the Westside Trail gives folks a chance to hop on the Beltline after the event wraps up.
This kicks off what Atlanta Department of Transportation says will be the biggest Streets Alive year ever, with eight events planned. Some will tie into World Cup hoopla, which should bring some international flair to the usually local-focused festivals. If you've never done one of these car-free street events, Sunday's new route is a good excuse to see how different the city feels when it belongs to people instead of cars.
