Come Monday, the Atlanta airport's years-long, ongoing expansion efforts will include thousands of new parking spaces designed to be walkable to a main domestic terminal.

According to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials, the new South Red Deck is scheduled to open June 1 near the South Terminal, which is primarily used as a hub for Delta Air Lines domestic flights. The project topped out in August.

The new deck has been described as a "serious upgrade" in a recent project update. The timing is fortuitous, with the FIFA World Cup bringing hundreds of thousands of additional travelers through the world's busiest airport starting June 11.

The South Red Deck will offer convenient access to the South Terminal, reducing the need for shuttle buses and long walks from remote parking lots. The addition addresses long-standing complaints about parking availability and accessibility at the sprawling airport complex.

Hartsfield-Jackson handles more than 93 million passengers annually and is preparing for even higher volumes during the World Cup tournament. The new parking capacity is part of broader infrastructure investments aimed at improving the passenger experience.

The airport recently completed other upgrades including concourse renovations and improved security checkpoint layouts.
