After 47 years, Atlanta's oldest Black-owned vegan restaurant has closed its doors. Soul Vegetarian in the West End served its final meals on July 12, according to The Atlanta Voice.

In its last days, the restaurant filled with regulars saying goodbye. One woman who had been coming since she was a child shared a meal with her teenage son, two generations connected by the same West End kitchen. That kind of loyalty is what made Soul Vegetarian more than a restaurant.

Opened in 1979, it was a pioneer of plant-based cooking in Atlanta long before vegan food went mainstream, and it anchored a stretch of the West End for decades. Its closing marks the end of a real chapter for the neighborhood and for the city's Black food history.
