Another child caught in the crossfire of adult violence. An 11-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet Saturday afternoon at The Commons apartments on Temple Court while multiple women were fighting outside. Police believe one of the women, dressed in all black, fired a gun into the air during the altercation.
The boy was rushed to the hospital, though police haven't released details about his injuries or whether the shooter has been arrested. But here's the bigger picture: The Commons has been plagued by violent crime. According to APD's crime tracking, there were 14 aggravated assaults there in the past year alone.
This is exactly the kind of senseless violence that destroys communities. An 11-year-old kid shouldn't have to worry about getting shot while playing outside his apartment. And firing a gun 'into the air' during a fight? That bullet has to come down somewhere, and this time it came down on a child. We've got to do better than this.
