Here we go again with another major street closure in Midtown. The city shut down Juniper Street between 10th and 11th this week for what they're calling "emergency sewer repairs," and it's going to be a mess for the next six weeks. We're talking about a key north-south route that connects Piedmont Park to the heart of Midtown, so this is going to ripple through the entire area.
The Watershed Management folks say they're replacing the existing sewer mains to repair defects and boost the system's capacity, which honestly sounds like something that probably should have been done before it became an emergency. This stretch of Juniper runs right through some of the densest parts of Midtown, serving all those high-rises and connecting people to MARTA's Midtown station.
If you're used to cutting through this area to get to Piedmont Park or avoiding Peachtree Street traffic, you're going to need new routes for the next month and a half. The city says there will be signs and detours, but anyone who's dealt with these kinds of projects knows that usually means more confusion than clarity. Plan extra time if you're heading anywhere near this area, especially during rush hour when Peachtree and surrounding streets are already packed.
