Things to Do in Atlanta This Weekend

Atlanta weekends have a rhythm. Farmers markets in the morning, BeltLine walks in the afternoon, restaurant reservations in the evening. The specific events change week to week, but the patterns are consistent enough that you can build a great weekend even without checking an events calendar.

This guide covers the recurring weekend activities, seasonal events, and evergreen options that make ITP Atlanta weekends worth looking forward to. Some of these happen every weekend. Others are seasonal. All of them are better than sitting in traffic on 285.

For specific one-time events happening this weekend, check our daily coverage on the homepage. This guide is about the reliable, repeatable weekend activities you can count on.

Saturday Morning: Farmers Markets

Atlanta has several solid farmers markets that run on Saturday mornings during the warmer months (typically April through December, though some operate year-round).

The main markets:

Market Location When Vibe
Piedmont Park Green Market Piedmont Park (south end) Sat 9am-1pm Biggest, most popular. Get there early.
Grant Park Farmers Market Grant Park Sat morning Smaller, more neighborhood-y, less crowded
Freedom Farmers Market Carter Center (Poncey-Highland) Sat morning Sustainable and organic focus. High quality.
East Atlanta Village Farmers Market EAV Thursday evenings Weeknight option during the season

Pro tips for market mornings:

  • The Piedmont Park Green Market has the best selection of local produce, baked goods, and prepared foods. Get there by 9:30am for the best picks.
  • Freedom Farmers Market at the Carter Center emphasizes sustainable and organic produce. Worth the trip for the quality of the vendors.
  • The Grant Park market is where you go if you want to skip the crowds and still get great stuff.

Even if you don't buy produce, farmers markets are one of the best free activities in Atlanta. Grab a coffee, walk around, and people-watch. It's a Saturday morning ritual for a reason.

Afternoon Activities: BeltLine, Parks, and Exploring

The BeltLine is the default Saturday and Sunday afternoon activity for a huge number of ITP residents. Walk, bike, or run the Eastside Trail from Piedmont Park to Krog Street Market. Stop for a beer at New Realm or food at one of the trail-side spots. On a nice day, the trail has a festival atmosphere without actually being a festival.

Other afternoon options:

  • Piedmont Park for pickup sports, the lake, and plenty of space to spread out
  • Atlanta Botanical Garden is excellent on weekend afternoons, especially during seasonal shows
  • The Chattahoochee River has tubing and kayaking options at various access points along the northern Perimeter. Surprisingly wild for being inside a major metro area.

Neighborhood exploring (pick one you haven't spent time in):

  1. Walk around Cabbagetown and look at the murals
  2. Browse the shops in Little Five Points
  3. Get lost on the side streets of Inman Park and look at the Victorian homes
  4. Wander the Decatur Square and pop into shops and bookstores
  5. Check out the street art in the Krog Street Tunnel

Each ITP neighborhood has enough character to fill an afternoon. The best weekend plan is sometimes just picking a direction and walking.

Weekend Food and Drink

Brunch is religion in Atlanta. The lines prove it.

The classics (arrive by 10am or wait):

  • Ria's Bluebird in Grant Park
  • Flying Biscuit in Candler Park
  • Home Grown in Reynoldstown

Lower-key alternatives (less wait, still excellent):

Spot Neighborhood Why Go
Le Petit Marche Kirkwood French-Southern food, no hour-long wait
8ARM Old Fourth Ward Casual weekend menu, good coffee
Chai Pani Decatur Indian brunch items unlike anything else in the city

Afternoon patios and breweries:

Saturday and Sunday afternoons are prime patio time. The best spots:

  • Argosy in East Atlanta Village (great burgers, big patio)
  • New Realm Brewing on the BeltLine (skyline views)
  • Barcelona in Inman Park (wine and tapas)
  • Any of the Decatur Square restaurants
  • Monday Night Brewing, Halfway Crooks, SweetWater, Creature Comforts (Decatur taproom) for casual weekend hangs

For Saturday dinner: Make a reservation. Staplehouse, Kimball House, Gunshow, and the popular Krog Street Market spots book up fast on weekends. Don't wing it.

Seasonal Weekend Events

Atlanta's event calendar is seasonal, and each season has its own personality.

Spring (March - May):

  • Inman Park Festival (April). One of the best neighborhood festivals in the Southeast. Free, outdoor, worth attending.
  • Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park
  • Decatur Arts Festival

Summer (June - August):

  • Music Midtown in Piedmont Park (the big ticketed music festival)
  • Screen on the Green (free outdoor movies in the park)
  • Various neighborhood block parties throughout ITP

Fall (September - November):

  • The Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade in September. Thousands of people walking the Eastside Trail carrying handmade lanterns. One of the most memorable evenings you'll have in this city.
  • East Atlanta Strut street festival
  • Little Five Points Halloween Parade (exactly as weird as you'd hope)
  • Perfect weather for outdoor dining

Fall is the best season in Atlanta, full stop. September through November is prime time for everything.

Winter (December - February):

  • Garden Lights at the Atlanta Botanical Garden (a major draw, buy tickets in advance)
  • Decatur's holiday events
  • Peach Drop downtown on New Year's Eve (when it happens)
  • The mild winters mean you can still eat on a patio in January most years
