Two upstart Georgia Supreme Court candidates held a press conference in Mechanicsville on Wednesday to announce major labor endorsements. Jen Jordan, running against Justice Sarah Warren, and Miracle Rankin, running against Justice Charlie Bethel, are both personal injury lawyers taking on a rarely contested level of state government.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), its affiliate Workers United, and Georgia Conservation Voters are backing both candidates. Our courts need to represent the people, not the powerful, Rankin said. Jordan pointed to her 2019 lawsuit against the Georgia Environmental Protection Division over cancer-causing ethylene oxide emissions from Sterigenics as evidence of her record.

Jordan also cited the 2021 Court of Appeals decision that allowed Georgia Power to pass nearly $9 billion in coal-ash cleanup costs on to ratepayers, a ruling the state Supreme Court declined to review. Georgia's nonpartisan judicial races get decided May 19 as part of the statewide primary. Early voting starts April 27.
