A new exhibit at Emory's Michael C. Carlos Museum puts the camera on the other side of the field. 'Footwork: Where We Gather' features photographs by Sheila Pree Bright of Atlanta soccer, football, and basketball fans in the places they converge, from stadiums to tailgate parties.

Bright, whose work hangs in the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, says she's not a sports fan herself. But turning her lens on the crowd revealed something familiar from her previous work documenting civil rights activists and the hip-hop scene.

'The game is really about community. It's about fellowship,' she says. 'These photographs go beyond the spectacle.' The exhibition explores how sports bring together people across cultural backgrounds over a shared experience.

Bright grew up in a military family, got her start photographing 1990s Houston hip-hop, and now calls Atlanta home. 'Footwork: Where We Gather' is on view through July 19.
