Brookhaven just landed a major trail investment. Urbanize Atlanta reported the Atlanta Regional Commission voted Wednesday to award the city $13.5 million in federal funding to complete Phase II of the Peachtree Creek Greenway, Brookhaven's flagship infrastructure project.
The Peachtree Creek Greenway is designed to run from Brookhaven through the Buford Highway corridor and eventually connect to the Atlanta BeltLine's Northeast Trail. Phase I, which opened in recent years, established the first sections of paved multi-use path along Peachtree Creek. Phase II will extend the trail further and build out the connections that make the greenway a true regional link rather than a standalone neighborhood amenity.
The ARC funding is a major investment for a project that has moved slower than boosters hoped. Brookhaven has been working on the greenway for years, and the $13.5 million commitment signals that regional planners see the trail as a priority for the metro's broader mobility network. The connection to the BeltLine is the piece that elevates the project from a nice Brookhaven park to a commuter and recreation corridor that serves multiple jurisdictions.
For Atlanta-area residents who use the BeltLine and wish it went further, the Peachtree Creek Greenway represents the next wave of trail investment. The BeltLine's loop around intown Atlanta is mostly complete on the Eastside and Westside, but the connections to surrounding cities and suburbs remain fragmented. Brookhaven's greenway, once finished, would give cyclists and pedestrians a path from the BeltLine into DeKalb County without fighting traffic on Buford Highway.
