Remember when The Beacon was the place to be? That tucked-away Grant Park warehouse district connected to the Southside Trail was absolutely buzzing during the pandemic, packed with artists, food vendors, and folks grabbing drinks like it was one massive brewery patio. Well, those days seem to be fading fast.
Kirkwood resident Taylor Cross, who used to be a regular, was shocked during a recent visit to see how many empty storefronts now dot the complex. By his count, maybe only 35% of The Beacon's retail space is actually occupied these days. That's a dramatic drop from when the place was practically bursting at the seams just a couple years ago.
The decline says a lot about the challenges facing smaller retail developments in our post-pandemic world. Even with that primo Beltline connection and the cool warehouse vibe, The Beacon is struggling to keep tenants. It makes you wonder what's next for this little slice of Grant Park that showed so much promise when everyone was looking for outdoor gathering spaces.
