Downtown Athens turned deadly early Saturday morning when a triple shooting in a North Jackson Street parking lot left one person dead and two others fighting for their lives. Police have made an arrest, but they're not releasing the suspect's name yet while the investigation continues.

The victim who died was 22-year-old Clayton Adams from Hull, Georgia. According to family members, Adams and another victim were actually trying to help the third victim, 20-year-old Landon Skinner, when the shooting happened. Police say one of the two survivors isn't expected to make it, which could turn this into a double homicide case.

This happened right in the heart of downtown Athens around 2:30 a.m., the kind of time and place where you'd expect college students to be heading home from bars. The fact that it appears some of the victims were Good Samaritans trying to help someone else makes it even more tragic. Athens has had its share of violence near the UGA campus in recent years, and incidents like this just reinforce concerns about safety in the downtown entertainment district.
