Thirty years after the torch arrived, the 1996 Olympic cauldron is at the center of a neighborhood conversation in Summerhill. Residents are applying fresh pressure to keep the cauldron in the neighborhood where it has stood since the Games, according to Axios Atlanta.
The cauldron tower sits near the site of the former Centennial Olympic Stadium, the venue that later became Turner Field and now anchors Georgia State's football program and the redevelopment reshaping the neighborhood. For an area that carried much of the Olympics' footprint, the cauldron is a rare physical reminder of that summer.
The push comes as Atlanta marks three decades since the 1996 Games, a milestone the city has been revisiting all summer. Summerhill neighbors would like the next thirty years of that story to stay right where it started.
