After more than two decades of unrealized plans, construction has finally begun on a landmark greenspace in the heart of Midtown.
Midtown Alliance reports that groundwork is underway for the interim public park at 98 14th St., a 4-acre site across from Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta. This is where the lavish No2 Opus Place skyscraper and a Santiago Calatrava-designed concert hall for the Atlanta Symphony were once proposed but never built.
Field Operations, the global design firm selected after a three-month search last year, is leading the project. The firm's portfolio includes notable projects from Brooklyn to Santa Monica and China.
The first phase of temporary improvements will level and grade the site, add a grass multi-use lawn, install walking paths around the perimeter, and finally remove construction fencing that has lined 14th Street for nearly a decade. The interim park is expected to be ready for public use and community programming this summer.
For Midtown residents who have watched the empty lot sit idle through multiple failed development attempts, seeing actual construction equipment on site marks a turning point.
