The Kirkwood Community Garden announced a major expansion Thursday after local property owner James Whitfield donated an adjacent half-acre vacant lot on Hosea L. Williams Drive. The donation will allow the garden to double from 45 to 85 individual plots and add dedicated space for a youth gardening education program set to launch in April.

Garden coordinator Priya Patel said the waiting list for plots had grown to over 60 families, making the expansion long overdue. "This neighborhood has an incredible demand for growing space, and we've had to turn people away for the past three years," Patel said. The new plots will be available on a first-come basis to Kirkwood residents, with a sliding-scale annual fee starting at $25.

The youth program, developed in partnership with Kirkwood Elementary School, will give students weekly hands-on experience with planting, composting, and harvesting. Whitfield, who has owned the lot since 2008, said he decided to donate rather than sell after seeing how the garden has strengthened neighborhood connections.
