John Lewis is getting a park. WSB-TV reported U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock have secured $2 million in federal funding to establish a John Lewis Memorial Park at the corner of Auburn Avenue and Jesse Hill Jr. Drive in Sweet Auburn. The park will be built around the existing HERO mural that honors the late congressman and civil rights leader.
Lewis died in July 2020 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He represented Georgia's 5th Congressional District for 33 years, and his legacy as a founding figure of the civil rights movement, a Freedom Rider, and a leader of the March on Washington made him one of the most revered figures in American politics. The Sweet Auburn location places the memorial in the heart of Atlanta's historically Black commercial district, steps from the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park.
The investment is part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Historic Butler Street YMCA, a building with its own civil rights history. The park will add green space and a gathering point to a stretch of Auburn Avenue that has seen significant investment in recent years. For Sweet Auburn, which has struggled to balance preservation and development, the John Lewis park represents a commitment to honoring the neighborhood's civil rights heritage while attracting visitors and investment.
Ossoff and Warnock, Georgia's two Democratic senators, announced the funding as part of a larger appropriations package. The park does not yet have a completion timeline, but the federal commitment means planning and design can begin. For Atlantans who marched with Lewis or watched him speak at the Edmund Pettus Bridge anniversary events, the park will be a place to mark that history.
