The partial government shutdown has gotten so bad that ICE agents are now walking the terminals at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The armed officers in tactical gear aren't doing security screenings or immigration enforcement, they're just there to provide extra security while TSA agents work without pay.
The situation at the airport is pretty grim. Travelers are being told to prepare for at least four-hour wait times to get through security, and that's on a good day. Nearly 3,500 TSA officers nationwide called out of work Monday, with Atlanta seeing particularly high absence rates. When 41% of TSA agents don't show up for work, you get the kind of chaos we're seeing.
Mayor Dickens put out a statement Sunday assuring residents that the ICE agents won't be doing immigration enforcement during this deployment. But seeing federal immigration officers patrolling the world's busiest airport because of a budget fight in Washington is pretty surreal, even for 2026 standards.
