The Democratic primary for Georgia governor gets its first major debate this Wednesday. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan, and former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond will square off in an hour-long format hosted by Nexstar Media.
The debate gives voters their best look yet at how the three candidates plan to differentiate themselves in what's shaping up to be one of the most competitive Democratic primaries in Georgia in years. Bottoms brings name recognition from her time as Atlanta's mayor during the pandemic and the 2020 election cycle. Duncan, a former Republican who became one of the most prominent critics of Trump's election fraud claims, is running as a centrist. Thurmond has deep roots in DeKalb County politics and state government.
More debates are on the way. The Atlanta Press Club's Loudermilk-Young Debate Series kicks off April 26, covering multiple statewide and federal races over three days.
