DeKalb County Schools held a public feedback session at Lakeside High on March 23, and hundreds of frustrated, angry parents showed up. Parents and kids from Oak Grove and Evansdale elementary schools protested outside before the meeting, holding signs advocating for small schools and a people-first approach.
"We're here to make ourselves heard," said Samuel Howe, an Oak Grove parent. "They are giving us lip service, they're saying they're listening to us, it's a process. This is not a process. This is a farce, and they're not listening."
The district's Student Assignment Project proposes closing several schools and consolidating others. Six more in-person feedback sessions are scheduled through March 30, plus four virtual sessions. The third round of proposals is expected soon.
