DeKalb County officials announced an arrest Tuesday in connection with 15 brush fires set over a few hours Sunday night and Monday morning in the Clarkston area. The fires threatened homes, apartments, and a nearby mosque.
County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and fire officials said the fires were set within a half-mile radius near the campuses of Georgia State's Perimeter College and Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Fire crews responded to multiple calls overnight as the blazes spread through dry brush.
Police have not released a motive for the alleged arson spree. The incident comes as Georgia grapples with drought conditions that have increased fire risk across the state. The suspected arsonist faces multiple charges.
