Dr. Tory Tomassetti is a Manhattan based psychologist, offering evidence-based couples therapy for couples of all ages and relationship statuses in New York. She has worked for more than a decade with couples at different stages of their relationship, including before marriage and after divorce.

Recent national polling suggests that cohabitating couples are experiencing significant distress during the pandemic. Repeating patterns of conflict, communication difficulties, lack of personal space, and little division between work and home life are contributing to increased alienation between partners. Dr. Tomassetti offers two forms of evidence-based couples therapy to help couples navigate problems that existed before the pandemic as well as those problems that have emerged due to unique, current stressors. The two approaches to couples therapy offered at Dr. Tomassetti’s private practice are Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) seeks to balance acceptance and change using principles of behaviorism and is a scientifically proven intervention for couples in distress. In IBCT, couples learn to interpret their partner’s behavior in a neutral to a positive manner, communicate more effectively, and problem-solve more efficiently. The desired result is to get the couple to work as a team. IBCT seeks to reduce polarization by contextualizing the partner’s behavior through a refined viewpoint that is beneficial to both parties. Dr. Tomassetti explains that IBCT is a good option for couples who are looking to improve communication skills and for separated adults who are struggling with co-parenting.

Emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT) is another evidence-based intervention for couples. In EFT, the primary goals are effective emotional expression, increased empathy, and strengthening secure attachment in the context of a relationship. The therapy seeks to get couples to actively listen to their partner’s experience of being in the relationship. In session, Dr. Tomassetti creates opportunities for each partner to listen to one another and build empathy. Couples are asked to spend less time explaining and more time listening to figure out what their partner might be trying to communicate.

Dr. Tomassetti is a licensed psychologist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety, trauma, insomnia, and marital/couple distress. She is a private practice psychologist focused on providing highly individualized, evidence-based care to individuals, couples, and families in New York and Louisiana. Dr. Tomassetti offers short-term therapies for conditions such as generalized anxiety, specific phobias, and insomnia, alongside more intensive therapies for conditions such as trauma-related disorders, OCD, and couple’s distress. Her approach to therapy is informed by her research experience, adherence to evidence-based treatments, and a focus on clients’ strengths and resiliency.

Tory Tomassetti graduated summa cum laude from Wilkes University prior to earning her Ph.D. in counseling psychology. She completed an APA-accredited internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the New Orleans VA, where she specialized in the assessment and treatment of anxiety and trauma-related disorders. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Tomassetti was the lead researcher in a trial that examined the effects of a novel intervention for persons with chronic sleep disturbance. Her research has been published in an APA journal and presented at regional, national, and international conferences.

Dr. Tomassetti worked alongside top providers in the field, first in New Orleans, and then in New York City, prior to opening her own practice in lower Manhattan. In New Orleans, she was a staff psychologist and served as the Associate Clinical Director of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center of New Orleans, where she refined her expertise in the assessment and behavioral treatment of individuals, couples, and families in a private practice setting. Later, she returned to the northeast, where she continued working with leaders in the field of CBT before launching her own private practice.

A testimonial highlighted on her website, says, “I’m so grateful for your therapy style. I’ve been to so many therapists over the years, and it never felt like the right fit until I started working with you. You’re really good at calling me out, but you know when to be supportive, too.”
