Several blocks of 1990s-era apartment buildings have been demolished in Castleberry Hill, directly south of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The 8-acre site, formerly home to Northside Plaza apartments, is being studied for redevelopment by Atlanta-based developer Carter.

Years of quiet property acquisitions preceded the demolition. A natural gas leak in November caused an explosion in one of the buildings, and all structures have since been cleared.

Carter, best known for resuscitating Summerhill's retail district after the Braves' ITP departure, is examining the site for potential housing and retail that would join a surge of investment in nearby blocks. The acreage is bounded by M.L.K. Jr. Drive, Northside Drive, and Markham Street.

For Castleberry Hill, which has seen fits and starts of development over the decades, the project could represent the area's most significant transformation since the stadium's 2017 opening displaced Friendship Baptist Church from the same stretch of land.
