The Atlanta BeltLine just got longer. A new segment of the Southside Trail officially opened this week, extending the multi-use path further through southeast Atlanta. The opening marks another milestone in the BeltLine's decades-long effort to complete a 22-mile loop of trails, parks, and transit around the city's core.
The Southside Trail has been one of the most anticipated sections of the BeltLine because it connects historically underinvested neighborhoods on the city's south side, including communities around Grant Park, Peoplestown, and the Pittsburgh neighborhood. Unlike the already-complete Eastside Trail, which runs through some of Atlanta's most expensive real estate, the Southside Trail is opening into areas that are still relatively affordable but changing fast.
For residents who have been watching the BeltLine's progress for years, the opening is both a celebration and a signal. New trail segments have historically accelerated nearby development, and community groups along the Southside corridor have been pushing for stronger anti-displacement protections as the path extends.
