Atlanta is one of the best large metros in the country for people buying their first home, according to the latest market report from Zillow.

Among the 50 largest metro areas in the United States, Atlanta ranked No. 4 for first-time homebuyer opportunity. Jacksonville, Florida took the top spot, followed by Birmingham, Alabama and San Antonio, Texas. Houston rounded out the top five.

Zillow determined the rankings by combining lower rent burdens with more affordable listings and less competition from other buyers. Six of the top 10 markets were in the Sun Belt, where improving inventory and relative affordability continue to make it easier for first-time buyers to break in.

The ranking reflects a shift in Atlanta's housing market. While the metro area saw explosive price growth during the pandemic era, recent inventory gains have started to ease competition. For buyers who have been priced out of coastal markets, Atlanta's combination of job growth, relatively lower price points, and expanding housing stock makes it an increasingly attractive option.

The report comes as the BeltLine corridor and surrounding ITP neighborhoods continue to see strong demand, though affordability remains a challenge in the most sought-after intown areas.
