Atlanta's taking a clear stance on immigration enforcement. The Public Safety Committee unanimously advanced two resolutions that would significantly limit ICE operations within the city. One bars any new ICE detention facilities from being built in Atlanta, while the other requires APD to document whenever ICE agents are present during police operations.
The timing is particularly pointed given that ICE agents are currently stationed at Hartsfield-Jackson because of the partial government shutdown. Dozens of residents showed up to advocate for these measures, making it clear this isn't just symbolic politics but something people genuinely care about.
But the committee meeting wasn't just about ICE. Firefighters and their supporters also packed the room to criticize Mayor Dickens for refusing to sign the city's first-ever firefighter union contract. The council already ratified it, but Dickens won't put his signature on it. That's creating some serious political tension as we head into what's likely to be a contentious budget season.
